The Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) has been ordered to tell its nurses to end their strike action, via social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
Fair Work Australia (FWA), which is Australia's national workplace relations tribunal, ordered the ANF union to make the request over social media to reach the nurses as swiftly as possible.
The nurses' industrial action has already caused the closure of hundreds of hospital beds, and the cancellation of almost one thousand surgical procedures.
The ANF has been ordered to issue its message by 9am Saturday, and to tell the nurses to return to work as usual.
The nurses are pushing for an 18.5 per cent pay rise over the next three years. But the government is suggesting an annual rise of just 2.5 per cent plus productivity gains.
