Sony has launched the FutureScapes initiative, a new crowdsourcing project that invites people across Europe to imagine how the world might look in 2025.
FutureScapes, which has been launched together with non-profit organisation Forum for the Future, will explore the challenges and issues facing the world in 14 years' time. Organisers also hope it will also look at the role that technology might play in enabling a more sustainable world.
The organisers hope to provide a forum for collaboration, bringing together input from members of the public from across Europe as well as a mix of scientists, artists, philosophers, technologists, writers, policy makers, community workers and environmentalists.
The first stage of FutureScapes is an innovation brainstorm which is being held in London today with 60 thinkers on sustainability and technology issues. They will brainstorm ideas and create a series of responses to four scenarios based on writing, painting, filming and sculpting.
The project will involve blogs, games, events and anything to encourage the public to think about alternative future visions, with technology as a key positive contribution.
Peter Madden, chief executive of Forum for the Future, said: 'If we are going to rise to the challenges of a sustainable future, we'll need to unleash a powerful wave of creativity. FutureScapes is a collaborative project, designed to help people imagine ways in which technology can help make a better world.'
Esther Maughan Mclachlan, general manager of sustainability at Sony Europe, said: 'FutureScapes 2025 is not about making predictions or sharing Sony's vision of the future. It's about engaging a wide variety of people in thinking about the various opportunities and challenges the world will have in 14 years' time and how we can use technology for positive outcomes to create better and more sustainable lifestyles.'
