Sainsbury's has launched a campaign together with charity FareShare in which it aims to collect enough food to contribute one million meals to people suffering from food poverty in Britain.
Shoppers wanting to take part in the Million Meal Appeal will be able to add a food item to their shopping from a special meal appeal shopping list which includes tins, dried pasta, instant coffee, rice and tea. They can then donate the item in a FareShare trolley once they have gone through the checkout.
FareShare will then redistribute the food to 700 organisations across the UK.
The Million Meal Appeal will take place on Saturday 26 November in more than 600 Sainsbury's supermarkets. Sainsbury's has pledged to match the meals donated by customers.
FareShare provides food to homeless shelters, breakfast clubs for vulnerable children, day centres for the elderly and other community-based organisations.
