International children's charity Plan UK has produced an interactive Facebook app to highlight the plight of young women around the world who have no birth certificate.
The 'Plan Your Story' app uses the Facebook user's key information to create a personalised video storybook.
The aim of the app is to raise awareness of the issue, which is a considerable problem in some of the world's poorest countries.
Justin Wylie, head of business development at Plan UK, said: 'Without a birth certificate, the user sees how key events in their life would change, for example an inability to prove their age could result in being married off whilst they're still a child, or being denied the right to go to school.'
Plan UK teamed up with social media agency Neoco to design the application. Pages of the virtual storybook will feature photographs from the user's own account.
The campaign is part of a Plan UK's larger strategy called 'Because I am a Girl', which aims to promote the rights of the 75 million girls around the globe who are not in school.
Users of the app will be given the opportunity to donate £2 to the charity's Girl Fund. Wylie said: 'People will see for themselves that a small donation can help fund projects that will make sure children get a birth certificate, thrive and pursue their education.'
