Marketing professionals are the biggest users of Facebook

People that work in marketing and IT are the most prolific users of Facebook at work, according to a recent survey by job site Reed.

More than a quarter of financial services professionals log on to their social networking profiles while at work.

The survey found that this figure increased to 33 per cent for engineers, 43 per cent for IT professionals, but top of the list was marketing professionals with 44 per cent admitting to accessing their accounts while in the office.

The survey revealed that Facebook was the most popular social media platform among workers, with 45 per cent citing it as their favourite. One fifth of those asked voted for LinkedIn as their preferred site, and 18 per cent voted for YouTube. Just 14 per cent preferred microblogging site Twitter while as few as three per cent liked blogs best of all.

Up to 28 per cent of companies blocked social networking sites altogether, while 32 per cent had no social media policy in place at all. Two fifths of companies allowed limited access to the sites.

Ten per cent admitted to using the sites solely for personal reasons, while more than a third claimed to use the social media platforms for business-related purposes. The remainder said that they used the sites for both personal and business purposes.

More than 60 per cent check their profiles between one and two times per day. While five per cent log on a minimum of ten times a day. A quarter of workers admitted that they check their accounts between three and five times each day.

Despite these results, two out of three respondents believed that companies should ban social media in the workplace.

More than six out of ten workers used mobile devices to access the social networking sites, while the remainder relied on their work computers.
