London 2012 Olympic Games sponsor Coca-Cola has pledged to recycle 80 million of its plastic bottles during the course of the Games, with the aim to achieve its most sustainable sponsorship to date.
The announcement came just one day after Grand Canyon abandoned plans to impose a ban on plastic bottles in the area after talks with the drinks giant, which prefers a recycling option.
Coca-Cola plans to recycle all colourless PET plastic (polyethylene terephthalate) from the Olympic Park. The packaging is expected to account for one fifth of the consumer waste produced at London 2012 Olympic venues.
This ambitious plan will help the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) to achieve its zero waste to landfill policy.
Jon Woods, country manager of Coca-Cola Great Britain and Ireland, said: 'We're committed to building on what we've learnt to help LOGOG make London 2012 the most sustainable Games of modern times.'
The drinks company has also placed more than 250 recycling bins around central London. The bins on Oxford Street collect more than one tonne of recyclable material every day.
