Two teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of posting racially abusive tweets on Newcastle United striker Sammy Ameobi's Twitter account.
The player was called a 'nigger' by one of his Twitter followers after he tweeted a photograph of a pair of black Nike football boots with the message: 'There will always be a place in my heart for the all blacks.'
The teenagers in question posted a reply which said: 'Your hand is nearly the same colour nigger,' to which Ameobi replied: 'Sad to see some people are still racist nowadays', and retweeted the original racist remark.
The two boys were arrested after the matter was reported to the Northumbria police.
Alan Pardew, the manager of Newcastle United, issued a statement saying that the club would not tolerate any racially abusive behaviour.
Officers have said that the Twitter account behind the abusive message has since been deleted.
