What are these sailor types up to?
It's not about sailors, silly. It's about shipping companies. They are getting together to make their industry more sustainable.
Oh really? How so?
The move is part of The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) which involves 17 global companies and non-governmental organisations. Together they will be looking at issues relating to the environment, employment and energy use.
What about employment?
It aims to improve the working conditions for the two million people who work in the industry.
That all sounds very impressive!
It's very necessary say the people behind the initiative. The shipping industry has been facing increasing threats from rising oil prices, shifts in world trade and increasing levels of investigation of the shipping industry's environmental performance.
What kinds of things will they be doing?
The aim of the shipping industry's new vision is to modify its energy mix to allow greater resource efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
It sounds like the changes are going to be big!
Indeed. Morten Engelstoft, chief operating officer at shipping company Maersk Line, said: 'We are in business for the long-term and therefore take an active role in defining the future we want to be part of.'
