Inverness residents will now stay up-to-date during major emergencies thanks to newly launched Facebook and Twitter pages that have been set up by the Highlands and Islands Strategic Co-ordinating Group (HISCG).
Users will be able to read updates about major incidents via the social media channels, and also post updates if they are near the scene themselves.
George Graham, chairman of the HISCG, told the Inverness Courier: 'As was demonstrated recently, especially during the riots in England, social media now plays an unprecedented role as a vehicle of public communication. It is essential that the public sector stays ahead of the game with regard to such developments and takes advantage of the opportunities they present to communicate more effectively with our communities.'
HISCG is responsible for emergency planning and major emergency response and recovery in Orkney, the Shetland Isles, Highlands and Western Isles. The group now has links on its homepage to its Twitter and Facebook pages.
