Anti-Slavery Day

When is Anti-Slavery Day? I've never heard of it.

In the UK it falls on 18 October.

How many years ago was this day established?

It was launched last year.

And what exactly is the day for?

It is to raise awareness for all of the people in the UK who are trapped by the horrors of modern slavery. The purpose of the day is to get organisations involved and help put an end to slavery.

Isn't Anti-Slavery Day on the same day as European Anti-Trafficking Day?

Yes. They both promote similar causes, so the organisers thought it fitting for them to be respected on the same day.

Will any events be held on the day itself?

A conference for young people will be held at the Museum of London in Docklands, which will provide information about modern slavery.

Who will be speaking that I might have heard of?

Have you heard of Baroness Lola Young?

Didn't she have something to do with the anti-slavery law?

Yes, in 2009 she helped to form the first law which criminalised slavery.

Wow, the students are pretty lucky to get the chance to ask someone like her some questions.

They get more than that. There will even be a workshop in which the young people will learn how to implement campaigning skills against slavery, and also learn how slavery is involved in the certain products that we buy.

So what else will be going on?

There is a 'Modern Slavery in London' campaign, which is part of the Unchosen London Film Campaign, will be played at the Museum of London in Docklands, and admission will be free. The film is called Britain's Secret Slaves, and highlights the common mistake that people believe slavery was abolished in the 19th Century.
