Flying low

I hear Ryanair is planning to remove toilets from its aircrafts. Tell me it isn't so.

Don't worry, the new plans proposed by Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary will not see all toilets removed.

How many will be left? One per plane?

Yes. One for all of the passengers and the staff to share.

Why on earth is he proposing to do that?

It is all in the quest to squeeze in as many passengers in as possible.

How many people might actually have to share a toilet?

Well the airline flies Boeing 737-800 jets which each seat 189 passengers, and if O'Leary gets his way and the passenger limit is increased, then he will remove two toilets and place a further six seats in each aircraft. This will leave 200 passengers and staff having to share just one toilet.

Ryanair never ceases to amaze me. There's always a new idea flying around! Would passengers at least get a reduced fare for the incionvenience?

They would save approximately £2 per ticket.

Nothing to write home about then! How long could people have to cross their legs for?

Ryanair's longest flight is almost four and a half hours long. But it has been suggested that at the start, the new plans would only be implemented in the aircrafts taking shorter routes.

Didn't Ryanair propose to have rows for people to stand up in for a very low fare?

Yes but that idea was scrapped. They were going to offer a standing spot for just £4 per person.

I also remember that at some point the airline was planning to charge passengers for using the toilets.

It was back in 2009 when Ryanair proposed to charge passengers £1 a go.
