Chief executive of Gatwick Airport Stewart Wingate took part in a one hour Q&A session on Twitter today, allowing passengers to raise any issues via the microblogging site.
A major area of concern was disruption caused by heavy snowfall last year and what contingency plans the airport had in place for this year. Wingate tweeted replies from the official @gatwick_airport account: 'November was extraordinary last year, we've doubled our snow fleet we'll work our socks off to deal with the snow.'
Members of staff at Gatwick also took to Twitter to quiz Wingate. One Twitter user listed possible improvements that could be made to the airport, which included 'more seating in baggage reclaim areas', 'better signage to pick up area' and 'better signs to toilets and trains'.
Some users were positive about the service provided by the airport, while others vented their frustrations. One participant in the Q&A asked: 'Why are the staff in your £45m new security area so rude?? They make everyone feel terrible.'
Other users were more opportunistic, with one user asking: 'Have you got any jobs going?'
On average, Wingate tweeted every three minutes, and even responded to a question from CorpComms Magazine regarding the new automated security gates at the South Terminal. He tweeted. 'We are pioneering this for the UK, we've got lots of hosts and so far so good.'
Gatwick Airport has more than 22,900 followers.
