The Conservative party saw a 39 per cent increase in media coverage on 2010, according to figures exclusively obtained from Precise, for CorpComms Magazine.
The Conservative party conference was mentioned in 2,152 articles this year compared to 1,555 mentions in 2010. The Liberal Democrat conference saw its highest-ever number of mentions this year. It garnered 1,493 articles of coverage compared to 1,059 last year, amounting to a 41 percent increase year-on-year.
The Labour party saw its media coverage rise this year (albeit to a lesser extent). The number of articles written rose nearly a quarter from 879 articles in 2010 to 1,106 in 2011. In 2009 when the party was last in power it received 1,228 articles of media coverage.
The figures show that the Labour conference attracted less media attention after it lost power following the 2010 General Election. Media coverage has recovered but remains below the levels seen before the previous election.
The big stories of this year's conference season were the party leaders' speeches, although Home Secretary Theresa May's controversial 'catgate' feud with Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke wound up in the top three stories of the Tory party conference.
Prime Minister David Cameron's speech received around double the amount of coverage as that of George Osborne, and 'catgate' received around half the coverage of the chancellor's speech.
Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper's speech at the Labour party conference received the third highest amount of coverage of the week as she refused to rule out a future leadership bid.
