Freelancers say they are poorer but more contented since going independent

The majority of PR and marketing consultants (81 per cent) say they are happier now having taken the self-employed route over full-time employment even though around half say they are earning less money as a consequence of the move.
Despite the lower pay, only 28 per cent of respondents said they would consider abandoning life as a freelance consultant if they were offered a full-time job.
These are the key findings of a report published by The Counsel House, a network of freelance consultants.
The report also found that more than half of those surveyed said that going freelance was their choice and more than three quarters of freelances said they enjoy a better lifestyle as a consequence of going independent.
In terms of outlook nearly 30 per cent of those interviewed thought 2011 would prove to be a better year for them financially than 2010, but 48 per cent thought 2012 would be a better year than 2011.
Nearly two thirds (64 per cent) said that they were finding the market increasingly competitive whilst 33 per cent said they were finding 'ageism' was an issue they came across whilst looking for work as a freelance.
