Facebook now has 800 million active users - more than the entire population of Europe, including Russia - which if it were a country, would make the social network the third most populated after India and China, according to new research from Royal Pingdom.

Such has been its growth that Facebook has as many users as the entire Internet had back in 2004 - the year in which the social network was founded - and today accounts for 38 per cent of the current Internet population.

Its active user base is equivalent to almost 186 times the population of Ireland or 13 times the population of the United Kingdom. It is also 88 times the population of Sweden and 2.5 times the population of the United States.

It took Facebook six years to reach its first 300 million users milestone but just over one year to increase its active user base from 500 million in July 2010 to 800 million in September. It has added 200 million active users (or 20 times the population of Belgium) since January.

The size of Facebook's active user base is equivalent to 38 per cent of the entire current Internet population or 294 per cent of the Internet population of North America.
