Staff at Ordnance Survey are now tweeting live updates to provide an insight into their work which results in as many as 5,000 changes every day to the national master map.
The location enabled tweets can also be viewed on a special interactive map which has been built using Ordnance Survey's web mapping API, OS OpenSpace. The map will also provide an approximate location of the tweeter within a radius of tens of metres.
Working in a range of roles, from surveying to quality assurance, 16 employees of Ordnance Survey will tweet on a daily basis to provide an insight into modern map making.
About 300 surveyors and an active flying unit provide information that result in changes to the national master map within six weeks.
One of the first tweets came from OS_Biggles, a member of Ordnance Survey's flying squad based in St Helens, Merseyside, who said: 'Is it corporate pride that makes me add our logo when writing OS on our milk in the fridge?' OS_Doug, a surveyor in Moray and north Aberdeenshire, tweeted: 'First job for the week is a new housing development in Peterhead. Close to Asda. GPS is never great on this site. May take all day.'
