David Cameron has been forced to re-write his rallying conference speech after negative reactions to his calls for Britons to pay off their credit cards.
In parts of the speech that were released last night, the PM was due to say: 'The only way out of a debt crisis is to deal with your debts. That means households - all of us - paying off the credit card and store card bills. It means banks getting their books in order.'
By 10am today there were reports on Twitter that Cameron had been forced to reconsider his speech after a backlash.
A Tory aide said the comments had been 'misinterpreted' and that Cameron wanted to make the point that people are already paying off their debts, according to a report on the Guardian's website.
The speech will instead say that households are already paying down their credit and store card bills.
