British businesses are more engaged with sustainability than ever before, yet UK plc is far from achieving the goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, according to a recent report by Forum for the Future and Environmental Data Services (ENDS).
Up to a fifth more sustainability reports are being produced by companies in the past year, and sustainability awareness is rising among graduates and employees.
But last year's results showed that the levels of industrial carbon emissions had increased. So too did industrial energy intensity and the carbon intensity of the UK grid electricity.
As the move towards sustainability has diminished, research and development budgets have also decreased.
David Bent, deputy director of sustainable business at Forum for the Future, said: 'UK plc is not acting fast enough or at the scale required to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.'
