More than half (55 per cent) of all pensioners use Facebook, and 32 per cent of adults use Twitter on a regular basis, according to new UK research by PR company UMPF.
There are 37.4 million adults aged 18 or older on Facebook, and 15.5 million who use Twitter regularly. As many as 32.1 million use YouTube regularly, 7.9 million use LinkedIn and 6.7 million are on Flickr.
LinkedIn is most used by men, and is more popular among the 20 to 30 year olds. And 28 per cent of the men surveyed check their accounts once a day as a minimum.
Just 15 per cent (7.2 million) said that they used Foursquare or other location-based tools, and Flickr was found to be slightly less popular with 6.7 million adults using the site regularly.
Facebook was found to be the most popular social network, with more than three in four people active on the site. Eight in ten women have a Facebook account, while just 72 per cent of men had an active profile.
A massive 95 per cent of those aged between 18 and 25 had an active Facebook account, compared with the 55 per cent of pensioners.
And 23 per cent of 25 to 34 year olds used LinkedIn, however just one in ten (14 per cent) of those aged 24 or younger used the site, emphasising its professional social media platform status.
