Orangutans could soon be making Skype calls direct from their cages...on their iPads, according to a new report.

Richard Zimmerman, founding director of the Orangutan Outreach programme, is keen to get the apes on board with the new technology. And also for them to keep in touch and participate in 'primate playdates' with other orangutans across America. Zoos in Phoenix, Atlanta and Toronto have already pledged to take part in the scheme. 

Zimmerman has a goal of expanding the programme and wants the orangutans to be able to access the Internet themselves to see which apes are also online at the same time.

Zimmerman said: 'This has been very successful and really seems to hold their interest. In fact, I think orangutan MJ has a crush on David Attenborough. Whenever he comes on to narrate a scene her eyes light up and she just stares.'

The end goal is for the public to be able to interact directly with the primates via iPad apps and games.
