John Pawson, a British minimalist designer and architect, has been commissioned to design an installation that will be located in St. Paul's Cathedral, to celebrate its 300 years.
Swarovski, high-street crystal jewellery specialists, will work alongside Pawson to create the design which has been named 'Perspectives'.
The design will feature an enormous Swarovski crystal lens that will be placed on top of a reflective metal lens at the bottom the staircase in the south-west tower. On the ceiling above there will be a convex mirror. The two installations will create an optical illusion for the visitors to the Cathedral. They will see an impression of the entire stairwell in an upwards and downwards perspective when they stand at the hemisphere.
The Church of England Cathedral named after Paul the apostle, was officially completed on 25 December 1711 when the final stone was attached to the lantern. The construction cost the equivelant of £147 million today, which in terms of crystal would get you more than 773 million Swarovski 'Appolon' amethyst rings.
