A new social media campaign has been launched on the official London 2012 Olympic Games website in a bid to discover which of the top 20 countries has the biggest fan base.
The campaign was launched to celebrate the fact that the opening ceremony is now just one year away, on 27 July 2012.
The country that receives the most activity on Twitter, YouTube and Flickr will be ranked the highest. Tweets can be posted with the #1yeartogo hashtag as well as a three letter country code, while videos can be posted to YouTube. Photos can be uploaded to Flickr and the user must add '1yeartogo' and their chosen country's name. The country codes are listed on the London 2012 website, which include 'BRA' for Brazil, 'MEX' for Mexico and 'GBR' for Great Britain.
More than 85,000 tweets have been posted so far, and North America is currently in the top position. It is also responsible for 16 per cent of the tweets. Brazil is in second place with 15 per cent of the tweets, closely followed by Great Britain with 14 per cent.
One twitter user posted: '#1yeartogo #GBR lets tweet people and support #TeamGB! :D.' And another user tweeted: '#1yeartogo #GBR Would like to wish our brilliant team all the best! Go Team GB xx.'
London will become the first city to host the Olympics three times. The stadium, situated in Marshgate Lane in East London's Stratford, has a capacity of 80,000 people.
