Tennis, tennis... and more tennis

It's Wimbledon time so, it's the question on everyone's lips, is Andy Murray going to reach the final this year?

Well, he'd be the first British player since Benny Austin in 1938 to reach a Wimbledon final and if he wins, fingers crossed, he'd be the first since Fred Perry in 1936.

That'll be an achievement! How old is Murray?

He turned 24 in May.

Isn't he aiming a bit high then?

Not really, he started playing aged five, when he was described as 'unbelievably competitive', so it's not like he hasn't had enough practice. And besides, there are far younger players than that. Australian Bernard Tomic is the youngest man since 1986 to reach the quarter-finals.

1986... that must have been Boris Becker's time. Wasn't he dreamy?

Weren't we talking about Andy Murray? But, yes, Becker was just 17 years old and unseeded when he won Wimbledon. He was also the first German to win the championship.

So who is Murray's competition?

Well Rafael Nadal beat him in the French Open semi-finals last month, and also in the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year. Murray remains hopeful though. It's his third time in the semi-finals.

Where is Nadal ranked then?

Number one... but Murray's a confident chap., and he's currently ranked four. They have played each other 15 times, and Nadal has won on 11 occasions. Actually, Nadal has beaten Murray more times than any other professional player.

That doesn't sound hopeful.

If you delve a bit deeper, Nadal won the first five matches, but since Murray recorded his first win in the US Open in 2008, it's been six-four in favour of Nadal. In their four matches on clay, Nadal has triumphed.

Who are Murray's sponsors?

Head sponsors him for racquets, and Adidas pays him a reported £3 million per year to wear their shirts.. If he wins Wimbledon, though, it has been estimated that his sponsorship earnings could top £100 million.

Well who knows, the 73-year wait may soon be over! Now, where are those strawberries and cream...?
