A new one-of-a-kind Christian Facebook application has been launched, breathing new life into social media.

The aim of the 'Holy Town' app is to create a virtual-reality church by collecting coins.

Players choose a holy character, who raise funds for their church through either virtual reality charity work or preaching. If their character uses religious terms such as 'sacrifice' or 'saviour' that is viewed as preaching to a religious community.

The character receives 'coins' which can be used towards building its virtual-reality church.

The amount of coins earned reflects the size of the church, and the bigger the church the better. More people can be reached by 'preaching' if the church can seat a larger group of attending worshippers. More people reached means more coins for the player.

Players can also gain coins via virtual-reality charity work.

The game, which already has more than 20,000 likes, was developed by Maiko Martin, who was inspired by his mother. She believed that a religious-themed game could be fun for young Christians who already enjoy Facebook games. 

Martin told the Christian Post that she believed 'allowing users to create their very own church would be fantastic, and it would provide a fantastic escape for Christians on Facebook who played other popular games.'
