The Pope has seen the social media light and has sacrificed tradition by posting his first message on Twitter.
The 'Holy City' has launched a new website (News.va) which provides Vatican news, upcoming events and activities, and the Pope has displayed his support openly.
Pope Benedictus XVI posted his tweet via the Vatican's official Twitter account (@news_va_en) yesterday: 'Dear Friends, I just launched News.va. Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI.'
The Pope went one step further towards the digital age, and posted his tweet using an iPad.
The account provides updates about the Pope, and today tweeted saying: 'Pope reflects on sixty years of priestly ministry §RV http://rv.va/t12vQf'
The @news_va_en Twitter account already has more than 42,000 followers, and almost 1,300 tweets have been posted. The launch of the site commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Pope's ordination to priesthood.
