A new iPhone app has been launched by the drivers of London's black cabs, which allows customers to 'hail a cab' directly from their mobile handsets.
The free 'LDNtaxi' app uses a GPS (global positioning system) to track how many taxis are within a two mile radius of the customer. Customers will no longer have to stand around in the rain as the app provides a realistic picture of the likelihood of a cab showing up.
If a taxi is found and a customer chooses to 'hail' it, they must agree the fare with the driver. If agreed, the driver will then send a message which will include his registration details and the colour of his cab. The message will also include a photograph of the driver to reduce roadside confusion. Customers are then notified when the taxi has arrived.
Minicab and chauffeur service 'Addison Lee' already has an established taxi app, which has been recently updated. The description of it on the iPhone app store says: 'Hail an Addison Lee minicab on-the-go from your iPhone with our newer, faster, and more intuitive app.'
