Webcast birth of rare breed foal

An Internet broadcast of the birth of a foal to Shire horse Queenie will be available online, and the live webcast will continue until after the birth.

The broadcast is part of the National Trust's 'My Farm' initiative which aims to reignite the passion for farm life and provide a better insight into farming, food and how it gets from farm to plate.

The project began in May and the risk of a 24/7 live broadcast is a big one. Richard Morris, manager at Wimpole Home Farm where Queenie lives, said: 'There's no guarantee the birth will be straightforward, particularly as Queenie had a miscarriage last year and a previous foal had to be put down due to a deformity.'

Wimpole Home Farm is one of three farms managed by the National Trust. It is also home to rare breeds such as Tamworth, Berkshire and Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs and Bagot goats.

Shire horses are decreasing in numbers; there are no more than 1,500 females still able to breed in the UK. This makes the birth extra special, and the webcam installed in Queenie's stable will ensure that the public do not miss the big event.
