The Archbishop of Canterbury

So how long ago was our current Archbishop of Canterbury appointed?

He, sorry Dr Rowan Williams, was enthroned in 2003, and is the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury.

Wasn't he the Archbishop of Wales at some point?

He was yes, meaning that he is the first Archbishop of Canterbury (of contemporary times) not to be appointed from within the Church of England.

Has he upset someone recently or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Well our prime minister isn't best pleased with his recent comments regarding government  coalition policies.

Come on, how bad could they have been?

Well he criticised the government saying that they were implementing 'radical policies for which no one voted'. David Cameron was not happy that his policies had been slated so publicly and said that he 'profoundly disagreed' with the comments.

A tad controversial perhaps!

It's not just Cameron that was miffed. Iain Duncan Smith was in the firing line, and the comments put to him have been dubbed 'ill-judged' and 'unacceptable'.

Have religious leaders backed the Archbishop?

Well the Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, had previously shown support towards Cameron's policies so he hasn't. But others within the Church of England agree that there is cause for concern and have said that many probably share the concerns of the Archbishop. Some members of the Labour party agree too.

So what did the Archbishop actually say?

The comments published in The Daily Telegraph showed that Dr Williams had claimed that our nation lives in fear because of the drastic policy changes in areas including health and education.

Well everyone is entitled to have an opinion I suppose.

Yes, but if it may cause unnecessary worry, should everyone be entitled?
