The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) has unveiled the next steps in its diversity strategy and demonstrate leadership in this area by developing five key areas of work over the next 12 to 18 months.
The CIPR will work to improve understanding of PR within communities in which it is currently not a visible career option; to promote a best practice approach to internships; to promote a competence-based approach to recruitment; to promote a best practice approach to re-employment and return to work; and to take steps to tackle glass ceiling issues.
The Institute will also re-examine its own policies, procedures and services to ensure that they meet expectations in terms of employment, access and inclusion.
This dual strategy will draw on the conclusions of the CIPR's Diversity Working Group, founded in 2010, which was considering how to develop an inclusive culture and how to raise awareness of the issue within the PR industry.
Cornelius Alexander, chair of the Diversity Working Group, said that it had taken a long time examining and discussing the issues affecting diversity within the profession 'and is ready to move the debate forward'.
