Where have the Daleks gone?

Where have the Daleks gone?

I've heard on the grapevine that the Daleks are disappearing from Dr Who. Tell me it isn't so!

Shocking but true. Steven Moffat, writer of the series, decided that it was time for them to take a break.

Apart from looking like a mixture of R2-D2 and a swing-lid dustbin, what actually are Daleks?

Cyborgs from the fictional planet of Skaro. These robot-like mutants were created towards the end of the long war against the Thals, by a scientist called Davros.

Are they as evil as they sound?

Well, they are said to have had all emotions removed... apart from hate, and their aim is to dominate the universe by ridding it of all non-Dalek life. So yes!

When did they come on the scene?

They made their debut in the second Dr Who series in December 1963, thanks to Terry Nation, the writer at the time.

Frankie Valli springs to mind. Moving on, have the Daleks featured in many episodes?

Enough times for the Doctor to have defeated them more than 400 times.

Not the most successful of villains then!

They are in the running for the least successful of all time it seems! Hence why the writer thought it was time for a rest. He is not saying 'exterminate!' as the Daleks themselves would, just that for now they are not going to appear in the series.

I can picture their mechanical voices now chanting that catchphrase! What will this do for Dr Who?

Well, it may pave the way for a new legendary enemy, presumably slightly more powerful than the Daleks. Who knows!

Is it just the children that are fanatical about Dr Who?

It attracts men, women, old or young. The show has avid fans that have followed it since its first appearance.

For their sake then I hope this doesn't spell the end of the Daleks... is there a chance?

It isn't the first time that they have had some time off. After the first series they didn't appear for a while. And during the 70s and 80s it wasn't unusual for them to disappear for years at a time.

Long live the Daleks is what I say!

They may have a new look when they eventually return, after their colourful makeover last year. Diamonds and pearls? Who knows, anything's possible in the world where a robot could dominate the universe.
