A new online 'Feedback Calculator' works out how many children around the world could be fed with the equivalent cost of someone's favourite meal.
The 'WeFeedback' initiative set up by the United Nations aims to encourage people to donate by demonstrating how little it costs of feeding a hungry child.
For example, if 'curry' is typed in and the estimated price is '£12' then the calculator reveals that the amount equates to 60 meals.
Followers of WeFeedback can then track how many children are being fed as a result of donations from members of their own community.
Users can also see which foods are calculated most frequently, one of which is birthday cakes. And at £10, one could feed as many as 50 children.
Nancy Roman, director of the United Nations world food programme (WFP), said: 'WeFeedback allows people to share food and activate their social networks, transforming something as simple as a cup of coffee or a sandwich into funds that can change lives of hungry children forever.'
People from Australia, South America and Europe are among the countries already taking part. Those from North America have 'feeded-back' sushi more than anything else, while others are favouring pizza.
Celebrities are showing support for the scheme, and world famous pop star Christina Aguilera is currently one of the biggest donors, and is a WFP ambassador against hunger. Drew Barrymore, Canadian television star George Stroumboulopoulos and Brazilian football player Kaka are also ambassadors for the cause.
To date, the equivalent of more than 100,000 meals has been raised in donations for the children.
