West Midlands police are to tweet directly from Birmingham Magistrate's Court in a social media experiment.
The scheme is part of the West Midlands Serve and Protect movement which is geared towards frequent offenders, and is the first of its kind. A range of court cases will be publicised, from drunk and disorderly charges to robbery and assault.
Assistant chief constable for the West Midlands police, Garry Forsyth, said: 'We hope that the 'tweet-a-thon' from Birmingham Magistrates' Court will give people a flavour for the range of offenders we deal with, an insight into the court system, and importantly, peace of mind that justice is being done.'
The force issued their tweets on the official @wmpolice Twitter page, which has more than 5,600 followers, and could also be viewed via the hashtag #wmpcts.
A typical example of the sort of tweets available was posted at 12:17pm yesterday from an iPhone and said: 'Woman pleads guilty to assaulting (spitting) bus driver, shoplifting and failing to appear at court. DNA lead(sic) to arrest. Jailed for 4 weeks.'
