The Nelson Mandela Foundation's social media accounts all now bear the name of the former president, after the creators of hoax accounts agreed to give them up.
The Foundation based in Johannesburg, which was established after Mandela's retirement in August 1999, appealed to London-based Twitter user Richard Millington to remove his account, allowing a genuine @NelsonMandela account to be registered.
The Twitter account already has more than 4,500 followers, with just 18 fairly ambiguous tweets.
The Foundation said: 'We are extremely pleased with Mr Millington's response and we would like to encourage others who hold domains using Nelson Mandela's name to hand them over to the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.'
The Foundation now has genuine Nelson Mandela accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr.
