Greenpeace now holds the world record for the highest number of comments posted on a Facebook page in 24 hours.
The environmental group had asked supporters to sign up for its 'Facebook Unfriend Coal' page to persuade the social networking giant to go green and stop using coal and nuclear power at its soon-to-be opened data centres.
Facebook had claimed its new data centres would comprise energy efficient computers but it soon emerged that the energy was to be supplied by coal.
More than 50,000 comments - Greenpeace's initial target - were posted on the 'Facebook Unfriend Coal' wall in just 12 hours, but more than 80,000 comments were posted by the end of the day.
Greenpeace celebrated with an email to each of its members, saying: 'Congratulations Everybody! You're all world record holders now.'
The comments are being displayed for Facebook employees on an LED screen outside its California office.
Greenpeace wants Facebook to respond to its Earth Day challenge and announce a plan to phase out its use of coal power by 2021.
