A new Foursquare app will allow travellers at San Francisco's international airport to win badges and prizes based on the number of check-ins they make.
The 'Terminal 2 Takeover' app has been launched by Virgin America to celebrate the opening of its new Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport.
Passengers can indulge in some light pre-flight entertainment via Facebook and Foursquare, which are specifically designed to alleviate the stress and boredom connected with travelling.
Jill Okawa, social media and communications manager for Virgin America, describes the app as a way to 'create a fun social experience that engages, recognises and rewards our first guest at T2'.
The airline will monitor passengers' check-ins, and award badges accordingly. Frequent fliers, who have checked-in more than 50 times, can win the 'captain' badge while one to four check-ins will earn the 'newbie' badge, the same awarded to all first check-ins made on Foursquare.
Random prizes, including free flight vouchers, are also up for grabs, depending on where and when passengers check-in at a given time. Those who download the app by checking-in on Facebook are also in with a chance of winning a game for their smartphone.
Kevin Barenblat, chief executive and co-founder of Context Optional, which created the app, said: 'Virgin America is taking social to new heights, combining mobile and social to energise their tech-savvy fan base.'
