High street retailer Marks & Spencer has pushed up Plan A to a new level with an environmentally friendly, carbon-neutral bra.
The launch of the bra yesterday will give a lift to Marks & Spencer's sustainable credentials. Available in four styles from the Autograph Leaves collection, the bras have been carefully scrutinised by the Carbon Trust, to ensure that the retailer's carbon-neutral claim is firm.
For those fashion aficionadas wanting something responsible yet raunchy, Marks & Spencer has produced carbon neutral suspenders in the same collection. Even the knickers in the collection have a carbon neutral footprint.
All the underwear has been manufactured in a factory in Sri Lanka which runs on renewable energy, and produces a third less carbon emissions than similar factories without such schemes in place. The remaining emissions were offset through a project run by the Conservation Carbon Company.
Mike Barry, Marks & Spencer's head of corporate social responsibility, said bras were the perfect product to attempt a carbon-neutral status with because they will always be popular with consumers.
The energy efficient bras cost £22, which is similar in price to many of the regular bras in-store and a bargain compared to a £35 silk and lace padded bra from the Autograph collection.
The retailer currently has no plans to introduce environmentally friendly men's underwear collections.
