An online game that could potentially connect with a global network of 32.5 million people - or roughly seven times the population of the Republic of Ireland - has been launched on St Patrick's Day by Tourism Ireland.
Online gamers that account for 24 per cent of US and UK Internet users can experience the potential that a holiday in Ireland has to offer, by playing the new Ireland Town game which went live on Facebook today.
Users have to create their idealised Irish town with the help from an online tour guide, with the not very Irish name of Sally.
Gamers can visit an e-version of famous sites and tourist attractions while completing entertaining challenges, each of which aims to demonstrate the array of things to do see and do within the Republic.
Each challenge includes nine separate tasks and those who accomplish the feat are in with a chance of winning more than a virtual vacation: a genuine holiday to Ireland is up for grabs.
If you invite your friends to sign up, the incentive to play the game is even greater as it allows you to progress faster and therefore takes less time to be in with a chance of winning the ultimate prize.
As many as 100,000 Facebook users are expected to sign up on the first day with the potential of online games such as these to go viral.
Mark Henry, managing director of Tourism Ireland, noted that as their website already has a following of 'a quarter of a million people around the globe, and each of the fans has in turn an average of 130 friends, Tourism Ireland can potentially engage with 32.5 million people worldwide' through their new game.
