Just days after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg created a Facebook for his new puppy Beast, it has emerged that 14 per cent of owners set up a Facebook account for their dog while six per cent of man's best friend have a Twitter account.
A survey of 407 American adults by online consumer research company Lab42 reveals that, of those dogs with a Facebook presence, 42 per cent had between one and 25 friends, 22 per cent had between 25 and 50 friends while one in five had between 50 and 100 friends.
The ultimate top dogs, representing three per cent of those with a social networking presence, had more than 500 friends apiece on their Facebook pages.
But the pooches may feel less pampered if they were to know that 45 per cent of owners said they would rather keep their Internet account than their dog, while 32 per cent would sacrifice their canine friend for a mobile phone.
However, owners do concede that social media has not really affected their dogs' relationship with the world. As one owner put it: 'It hasn't that I know of. Hang on, I'll ask him...he says it hasn't.'
