HJ Heinz is to rebottle its world famous tomato ketchup into greener packaging from this summer when it starts using PlantBottle packaging for all 20 ounce containers.
The switch is a major part of Heinz's stated objective to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, solid waste, water consumption and energy usage by at least 20 per cent by 2015.
Up to 30 per cent of the PlantBottles comes from plants, using Brazilian sugarcane ethanol, and are fully recyclable.
The PlantBottle is the biggest change to Heinz tomato ketchup since 1983, when the food manufacturer of '52 varieties' introduced plastic containers.
The new packaging will launch in June and initially have special labels with a special logo and the message, 'Guess what my bottle is made of?'
Coca-Cola launched the PlantBottle two years ago. It is currently used for its brands Coke, Sprite, Fresca and Dasani in markets Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Sweden and the United States.
The initiative eliminated the equivalent of almost 30,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide last year, and will be rolled out across 12 new markets this year.
