The Roman Catholic Church has further embraced social media by endorsing a new Confession app that is described as 'the perfect aid for every penitent'.
The password protected iPhone app contains a 'personalised examination of conscience for each user' and a 'step by step guide to the sacrament' for'Catholics to prayerfully prepare for and participate in the Rite of Penance'.
It offers a 'custom examination of Conscience based upon age, sex and vocation (single, married, priest or religious)' with the ability to 'add sins' to the app's existing list.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the app does not forgive sins and users will still need to visit the confessional in order to receive absolution.
It is not the first app for Catholics. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford launched an iPhone app last July that delivers daily readings, thoughts and saints. Communications officer Father John Flynn said at the time that the project was about making Catholicism 'completely accessible and palatable' to all.
Earlier this year Pope Benedict said that 'young people may learn to use modern means of social communication for their personal growth and to better prepare themselves to serve society'.
