Facebook top of the jobs

Facebook is the best large company in America to work for, closely followed by budget airline Southwest Airlines and management consultants Bain & Company, according to online career consultants Glassdoor's latest '2011 Best Places to Work'.

Employees awarded Facebook a score of 4.6 out of a possible five points, claiming they were 'very satisfied' to work at the social networking company. They described the environment as 'the best I have ever seen in a workplace', adding: 'The job is all about cooperation, not competition.' Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg achieved a staggering 96 per cent approval rate.

But there was one small grumble. Employees complained that, despite their small numbers, 'everyone is expected to change the world'.

Edelman, the privately owned PR consultancy, was ranked fifth, scoring four points. One employee described his career as 'work hard, learn a lot' and Edelman was praised for its smart colleagues and visionary management while chief executive Richard Edelman achieved a 93 per cent approval rate.

On the negative side, however, employees complained about the work life balance, prompting Glassdoor to advise Edelman's senior management to 'review work life balance on your team for more productive staff'.

Apple achieved 20th position on the list of 50, while Google came in at number 30. Employees at Apple are 'satisfied', scoring the technology company 3.7 out of five and assigning chief executive Steve Jobs a 97 per cent approval rate. Most grumbles relate to 'incredible' workloads and poor internal communications.

Google also scored 3.7 out of five, while chief executive Eric Schmidt had a 96 per cent approval rate.
