New Caledonia launches online biodiversity portal

New Caledonia, in the southwest Pacific Ocean, has launched the world's first online biodiversity portal for a whole territory, drawing together zoological researchers, NGOs and local communities to raise awareness of ecological concerns and better protect and develop the region's exceptional natural habitats.
The territory's lagoons and reefs gained UNESCO World Heritage status in July 2008 and the site has been created to showcase the region's biodiversity and projects currently being carried out to preserve it, with the collaboration of 30 key research and conservation organisations.
The site is accessible to both scientists and laymen, with a 'discovery' portal to give an introductory flavour of the region's marine and terrestrial ecosystems and more specialised tools for those boasting a background in zoology and ecology.
