People more likely to lie online than in person

People are more likely to lie on Facebook or Twitter than when talking face-to-face, according to a study by Optimum Research on behalf of Direct Line insurance.
The Straight Talking Report revealed that one in three people were more candid when talking to someone in person, where body language and tone of voice may betray their true motivations.
Perhaps more surprisingly some were emboldened by the anonymity of digital media, with one in five more likely to be honest on Twitter or via a text message.
When it comes to honesty, there is some divergence between the sexes. Men are more likely to be economical with the truth in a text, with just 17 per cent claiming greater frankness via this medium compared to 21 per cent of women. The fairer sex is meanwhile much more likely to tell tales in person, with 12 per cent more men than women claiming to be earnest face-to-face.
