Workplace Facebook users are digital voyeurs, according to a study by network security company Palo Alto Networks.
The bulk of the site's workplace traffic, 69 per cent, is taken up with users simply viewing other user profiles, while playing games and posting comments constitute just five per cent and one per cent of site usage respectively, reveals the company's Application Usage and Risk Report.
Facebook, found in 96 per cent of participating companies, is king of the workplace social networks, with five times the site traffic of all the 47 other social networking applications combined, and consuming 76 per cent of the social networking bandwidth.
Employers are increasingly trying to find ways to rein in recreational digital activities in the workplace. René Bonvanie, vice president of worldwide marketing at Palo Alto Networks, said: 'IT teams are looking for ways to retain control within their organisation at a time when non-IT-supported projects are pervasive. In fact, we're starting to see more trending of IT teams themselves embracing more progressive enterprise applications, which is indicative of these disruptive forces at work.'
