A senior British army officer will next month begin tweeting updates direct from the front line.
Lieutenant Colonel Dougie Graham, commanding officer of the Royal Highland Fusiliers, Second Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland will use the micro-blogging site Twitter to publish regular messages during the regiment's six-month tour of Afghanistan.
A Facebook profile already exists for all serving and former members of the battalion as a forum for sharing photos, messages, news of events and links to military embroidered clothing but this new Twitter account would be the first to link those back home directly to their men on the front line.
In an interview with the Telegraph, Lt Col Graham said: 'I would like to be able to give people a feel for the reality because it's not all fighting, it's not all bombs and bullets. What we're trying to do is draw everything together so that we can get messages of support to the men, as well as updates of what the battalion's been doing back home.'
Graham is currently in talks with the his commanding officers over what restrictions will be placed on his micro-blogging communications. He is set to begin posting on behalf of the 450-strong battalion as they leave for Lashkar Gah, the capital of the Helmand Province in the next few weeks.
