Social networking amongst over 50s Internet users has almost doubled in the US over the past year, with 42 per cent now turning to these forums to share links, photos, videos and status updates with friends and family.
According to a study by US pollsters Pew Research Centre, the over 65s are getting wired, with 26 per cent now embracing social media channels with gusto. The older generation is also wittering on Twitter, with one in ten Internet savvy 50-64 year olds signing up for this tool. Three quarters of over fifties on the Internet get their daily news instalment online.
But email remains the favoured communication tool for those of riper years, with 92 per cent of online 50-64 year olds using the medium every day.
Industries marketing to the more mature consumer have not overlooked this growing trend. Saga has even set up its own social networking site for the over 50s called SagaZone. The network offers a similar service to Facebook, allowing users to upload photos and videos, write a blog, create and join clubs and instant message friends and family.
Masquerade as a 65-year-old on Facebook and you find Princess cruises, golfing holidays, online Bingo and the M&S wine club soliciting your attention. It is suggested you may be interested in Grade II listed properties and unearthing far-flung relatives on Genes Reunited. And your recommended wheels are the Kia Experience 7.
