The social balance has shifted with 33 per cent of businesses now turning to Twitter to engage with customers compared to 32 per cent using Facebook, according to a survey of the social media preferences of 5,000 companies nationwide conducted by Virgin Media Business.
The figures are extremely close, but it is significant for being the first time there has been any hint of a challenge to Facebook's supremacy.
Facebook forerunner MySpace is still holding ground with 29 per cent of UK companies exploiting the forum, whilst 19 per cent blog and 17 per cent upload corporate video content onto YouTube.
This announcement of a social media shake-up comes just a few days after an IBM survey revealed that many companies remain daunted by Web 2.0 tools. In a survey of 1,000 of IBM's business partners, 74 per cent said they were unsure how best to employ social media in the workplace.
